Vukukhanye Community Upliftment Initiatives

Vukukhanye is a Non Profit and Public Benefit Organisation that was established in 2001. Their aim is to support and care for vulnerable children and families, as well as orphans, in Chesterville in the Cato Manor region of eThekwini, Kwa-Zulu Natal.

For years, Frontline Underwriting Managers has been partners with Vukukhanye in order to strive to make a difference to people’s lives and their communities.

Amongst the many other projects and support they offer, these are their 4 main projects:

Children’s Foster Home – since 2001

Vukukhanye’s foster home is a long and short-term home for children who have been orphaned, abused, neglected or abandoned. Their home houses 6 – 8 children at a time. Since its establishment in 2001, their foster home has supported and taken care of over 70 children.

Bursary Project – since 2008

Since 2008, Vukukhanye has had a bursary project that aims to help the youth of Chesterville achieve tertiary qualifications so that they can have careers and support themselves.

At the moment, there are 20 bursaries given out – 13 to kids in school and 7 to kids at university. Their bursaries are incredible as they include fees, text books, stationary and uniforms; and the kids are supported until they have completed their tertiary education!

So far, there have been 4 graduates. Study fields include Science, Nursing, Marketing, Commerce, Social Science, IT, Financial Accounting and Civil and Electrical Engineering.

Vukukhanye Educare Centre – since 2012

The Educare Centre enrols 46 children under the age of 6 years and their aim is to be a preschool for these disadvantaged kids. By doing this, Vukukhanye gives children the initial school experience they need in that area.

Their priority is to empower the staff with early childhood education training and management skills to ensure the best for the kids.

The Educare Centre operates daily from 7:30am until 3pm and the children get breakfast, a mid-morning snack and a cooked lunch.

Welfare Support

Welfare support is provided to vulnerable families through a community worker. This community worker visits the homes of the families and follows up with them too.

Social services are offered to families that are in need, including child-headed households. These families’ needs include assistance, counselling, food, infant formula, school needs and much more.
